This Week in Preschool: Virtual Travel Days!

Dear Kids,

To make up for Mommy's-gotta-do-a-lot-of-work-today-so-PLEASE-play-nicely-with-each-other Mornings, I attempt preschool creativity at least once a week. Some days it is a simple craft that gets both of you excited. Other days we don particular colors and celebrate elements of the rainbow. Occasionally, I go all out and have a load of fun with both you. The last couple of days were the later option!

Thursday and Friday marked Virtual Travel Days, where we imagined travelling to some faraway destination at very little cost to our family. To coordinate with our church's MB Missions Daily Prayer Guide, our country of choice was Germany. It was an added bonus that your Mausi & Mausa (Maternal Auntie & Uncle) are currently living and studying in Germany, so we could remember them in our prayers as well.

Here is what we did:

DAY 1: January 24, 2013 ~ Let's Play Together!
  1. Put together the Melissa & Doug World Map Puzzle and located Germany.
  2. Colored Flag of Germany and Black Eagle (National Symbol of Germany) printed from Kidzone.
  3. Played the "Plane Game" where we set up chairs in the basement and pretended we were boarding a jet to Germany. Prior to, we made fake boarding passes and packed carry-on baggage with preschool necessities. You kids loved it when I, the flight attendant, service you cookies, apple slices, and iced tea using A's Green Toys Tea Set.
  4. After arriving in "Germany", we turned on the lap top and watched a GERMANY welcomes YOU!!! You Tube video. We also checked out Our Journey Home to view some pictures of Germany as your Mausi journals from the land of Bratwursts and incredible cheese (thanks M. for the words)! Plus, we read some information about Deutschland from National Geographic for Kids.
  5. Throughout the morning, we tried to practice a wee bit of German: Bitte (Please), Danke (Thank you), and Guten Tag (Good Day).
Day 2: January 25, 2013 ~ Let's Eat & Pray Together!
    Mmmmm German Chocolate Cake!
  1. Baked German inspired foods, particularly a chocolate cake smothered with German Chocolate Cake Frosting and crusty German rolls called Brotchen. These goodies accompanied our supper of corn chowder made with yummy Mennonite Farmer Sausage.
  2. Prayed for the work of MB Missionaries in Germany as a family.
The days were not perfect, however. Time-outs were served followed by apologies to offended parties. Your Mommy got distracted by household tasks/projects. Regardless, fun was had by all!

Is God Good?

During "at home learning", I helped my daughter design an experiment on plants. She set up four identical pots with the same amount of soil in the same location on our deck (controlling her variables, right?). She planted two bean seeds in each pot. She watered three out of the four plants with various amounts of water (1/4 cup, 1/2 cup and 1 cup). The fourth plant only received whatever water naturally fell from the sky. At the end of one month, her hypothesis was partially verified. She thought the 1/4 cup water plant and 1/2 cup water plant would grow the best, which was true in the end. Daunting {But Not Impossible}

I rarely watch the news. I catch up on the world's happenings -- where often the horror is reported -- via Google News. Or the brief blurb before classic rock on our favourite radio station. But very occasionally, at the end of the day, I take in the images of national and global headlines. Yesterday I watched the masses trek across Europe, searching for a safe haven away from war-torn Syria. I witnessed little kids crying as they tried to rub away tear gas sprayed by unrelenting border police. The message? You are not welcome in this country. I choked up as a father and his son fell to the ground after being tripped up by guards. The look of desperation on people's faces was heart breaking. Our country is nearing a Federal Election in October. Many voters are curious how the next Prime Minister will address the Syrian Refugee Crisis. Banking in the Now

This month we are trying something different: banking in the now instead of the tomorrow. Oh, it is nothing new, really. I used to operate like this in my single days. But then the lure of credit cards with reward programs persuaded me otherwise. While I never gave Visa the joy in collecting any interest payments from our bank accounts and I always payed our credit card bill before the 21 days of grace were up, I probably spent more than I should have some months. Why? Because I didn't have to pay for it immediately . It was not until last year that my credit card habits started to bother my conscience. Up to that point, I felt proud of the fact that the credit card company was paying me to use their plastic. I received stuff for free, even after paying my annual fee. Free fuel. Free flights.
